Hector has his roots in Argentina and is "El Roots Cantinero" in NYC. He has been the Roots ambassador in New York since the summer 2018, and is connecting his own Argentinean temperament with his NY experience, wrapped up with some greek Roots.
Hector where are your own roots and how did you end up in New York City & the Bathtub gin ?
I live in New York now but my roots are in Hurlingham, a small town outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina. I started as a Bartender because there was a bartending school on the way to my chemistry school when I was 16 years old. Since then, I became very curious about mixing different flavours and understanding how everything was made. However, I needed to be 18 to be allowed to study. So once I finished school and while looking for laboratory jobs, I started washing dishes and cooking a little bit for a bar in my town. There, I started practicing my first cocktails. After 7 years of bartending in Buenos Aires, my passion brought me to NYC. A year later, I started working at Bathtub Gin. This opportunity means a lot to me because I can learn and work with amazing professionals and incredible people.
What do you think of the trend of simpler cocktails & low abv drinks, and the new wave of modern liqueurs in the NYC bars ?
I believe that simple cocktails make great classics, and I love the type of drink that anyone can make anywhere. Simple ingredients and low abv cocktails are in my opinion a great way to experience new flavours, and create good cocktails that can be made for different occasions such as an aperitif, a dessert cocktail, or a light drink after work. New age liqueurs like Roots offer great opportunities and are a great base for such cocktails. The unique ingredients and tastes of Roots, and also the fact that they are lower abv than a gin or a vodka for example, give me the chance to create uniquely tasting spritzers or simple classic twists. And also there is the storytelling factor at the bar about the terroir and the heritage of Roots which can engage even the most demanding client.
Roots is a craft liqueur range with heritage from Greece. How did you embrace it at Bathtub gin & how do think the Roots philosophy fits into the multicultural and very dynamic metropolis of NY ?
I fell in love from the first time I tried Roots Mastiha and now i love all the products. Coming from another city and having my roots thousands miles away from NYC, I found the philosophy of looking back to your roots, very similar of how I try to live always representing my culture. In NYC, the heritage of people can be very different from each other but that makes this city very unique and beautiful. Thus the philosophy of Roots fits perfectly into the lifestyle and philosophy of a very multicultural and dynamic metropolis like NY, where everyone is constantly looking for new experiences, new opportunities and new horizons, however a compass for anything new is knowing where you come from and your heritage. This is what Roots is about and this is why they are . so unique in different ways.
